GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAM

THE DEPARTMENT OF ART

Beyond the aesthetic/formal issues of art and design are the many philosophical, theoretical, and ideological questions and concerns which thinking individuals choose from and/or devise to address in a variety of ways.

There is no set agenda, however, for message and content generated by our students. Instead we, the faculty, have the expectation that critical thought and questioning will occur, that intelligent ideas will be formed, and that new and exciting connections will be discovered by each of our artists, designers, art historians, and art educators.

Much of graduate study is consumed by the search for specific methods, directions, and results which will then lead to a greater body of professional research. The graduate student is to complete this journey in an environment so saturated with information and possibilities that uncovering any single path of exploration is the real challenge. With the benefit of hindsight, our graduates see clearly that the thesis wasn’t the total answer, but rather it was the cumulative effect of their experiences here that created growth and the potential to go on to greater things.
